About half of Americans with dogs have mixed breeds, aka mutts. But for the half of dog lovers who adopt purebred pets, the number one breed — for the 29th year in a row — remains the Labrador retriever. So reports the American Kennel Club.
It’s no surprise. Labs tend to be friendly, outgoing, high-spirited, and affectionate companions who do well with families.
Interestingly, while Labs are the number one preferred breed in general in the U.S., French bulldogs are top dog in Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
Other breeds in the top 10 include German shepherds, golden retrievers, poodles, and Pembroke Welsh corgis, who made it onto the list of faves for the first time ever by nudging the Yorkshire terrier from the number 10 spot.
