The results are in for which state has the highest proportion of households with dogs — and the winner is Idaho, with 58 percent of homes having at least one, says the American Veterinary Medical Association. Arkansas and Montana tie for second, each at 52 percent, followed by Mississippi and West Virginia, at 51 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
The lowest percentage for households with dogs goes to two New England States — New Hampshire and Connecticut, each at 24 percent. New Englanders seem to have a thing for cats. New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine are in the top five states for cat-owning homes. Go figure.
