If a Service Dog Comes Over to You

0

You know that you’re not supposed to pet a service dog without obtaining permission first from the dog’s person. The dog is working and could be distracted by your attention.

Perhaps the animal is watching for an epileptic attack; helping to keep his person from a panic attack resulting from PTSD; getting ready to push a button on an automatic door that someone using a wheelchair can’t reach; or guiding someone who is visually impaired. Even a dog snoozing by his person’s feet is on the job.

The one time you should not keep away from a service dog is if, wearing his vest, he comes over to you unattended by someone. Whether he barks at you or nudges you with his nose, he is signaling that something has happened to his person and he needs your help, says Guide Dogs of America. In such a case, follow the dog. He will lead you back to his human. Once you’re there, ascertain what’s going on and, if necessary, call 911 immediately.
